Refractions teams with Vivid Solutions and University of Victoria on PostGIS Enhancements
Refractions Research has joined with Vivid Solutions, the University of Victoria Software Engineering Group, and the BC Advanced Systems Institute (ASI) in a joint research project to add topological operators to the PostGIS open source spatial database. Vivid, Refractions and ASI are all providing funding to the project, which will include developers from the university and both companies.
"This project is an excellent example of partnership between the academic and business community to advance the state of open source software", said Paul Ramsey, president of Refractions Research. "Improvements in advanced software like the PostGIS spatial database benefit business by providing a superior product to offer to clients, and also benefits the academic community, who gain a top calibre piece of software for research purposes."
The project will focus on adding topological operators to PostGIS, completing support for all the operators specified in the OpenGIS Consortium "Simple Features for SQL" specification. Among the operators to be added are:
- Touches()
- Contains()
- Overlaps()
- Buffer()
- Union()
- Difference()
Once the project is complete, PostGIS will be submitted to the OpenGIS Consortium for conformance testing and certification as an OpenGIS standard SQL spatial database.
